Oceangoing Master Orhan K. Babaoğlu was born in Maçka in 1961 and graduated from Turkish Naval Academy with distiction in 1982. Capt. Babaoglu started his navy career as a submariner. In between his submarine assignments, he completed his postgraduate education in 1986-1988 in the United States and received his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degree. In addition, he has become a graduate both from U.S. and Turkish Naval War Colleges.
Capt. Babaoglu appointed as the skipper (commander) of submarine TCG YILDIRAY between1995 and 1997. During his submarine commander duty, his submarine has received the “excellent submarine” award.
After various headquarters assignments, Capt. Babaoglu was appointed to NATO Naval Forces headquarters in Naples in 1999 to operate NATO's Mediterranean naval task forces for the first time as a Turkish officer. During this demanding period, Capt Babaoglu and his team have initiated Operation Active Endeavour against terrorist activities in Medeiterrenean. Capt. Babaoglu have received two medals and several recognitions for his outstanding service.
Just before the retirement from the Navy on his own will, Capt. Babaoglu was appointed as the Dean of Academics in Naval Academy in 2007. He has breefly worked as an instructor in Pirireis University before transferring to the defence industry. Capt. Babaoglu was the founding Secretary Genaral of HAVELSAN when relieved from his post in 2016.
Capt. Babaoglu worked as an instructor in Girne American University between 2017 and 2025 before becoming a member of the Kyrenia University family.
Captain Babaoglu is happily married and a proud father of one. He speaks fluent English.
